mock up of my magazine front cover...

This is my mock up of my magazine in stages...
I didn't like the effect that colour gave it looked to much like a gossip magazine.

As you can see I put the whole image into monochrome. I did this because I could use a contrasting coloured font on top and it would show up more than being on a coloured background. Also, I like the effect it gives.

Deconstruction of Contents Pages..

After, deconstructing front covers and double page spreads, I decided it would be a good idea to look at the type of layout and presentations of contents pages aswell, to help me further with creating my own music contents page for my magazine.

{ This contents page, is very different to those I have ever seen. As you can see the page numbers are placed right at the bottom of the page, rather that the usual layout of columns up and down the page. This contents page also uses a colour pallette of monochrome. This is a clever technique to use as the white stands out against black. With this contents page they have divided the page into thirds, e.g. 'CONTENTS' is right accross the top, there is an image of a skater on a skateboard and right at the bottom of the page is the page numbers (contents of the magazine).

{ This uses a similar technique of thirds, except that it could be argued that it runs both ways. e.g. Going horizontally, we have in the top third 'FEB08 CONTENTS' and in the middle is all the text and at the bottom is an image. Going vertically, we have the three different columns of text. Similarally, a monochrome technique is used for the same effect that it stands out, e.g. white background with black bold letters on top to create contrast.

{ This magazine also uses the thirds technique, going horizontally. This contents page uses alot of images around the text.. its almost like its being used as a border, perhaps? Because there is no obvious 'contents' title, I assume that the magazine is called, 'KINGSIZE', as it written in bold capital letters. i also assume that it is a music magazine, as all of the images look as though they are images of music artists/bands.

what i found out from my questionnaire...and My editorial profile/Target Readership for my magazine...

What i found out from my Questionnaire...
I asked 20 people in the age band of 16-24 year olds and From my questionnaire I found out that, more 16-18 year olds would be interested in having a music magazine that appealed to them generally, whereas 19-24 year olds said either that they never read any music magazines or that they buy one time to time. However, a much higher number of people said that there just isnt much of a range of music magazines and that most of them are very much aimed at a neiche market. From my Questionnaire, I found out that RnB and hip-hop were the most popular type of music. I also found out that people normally look for a women model on a front cover of a magazine because it (1) appeals to some men and sometimes captures there interest and (2) some women aspire to be like the models on front covers. so, they look up to them.
later on in my questionnaire I posed the question of which possible music magazine titles would most appeal to you.... the most popular titles out of all of them was; (1) Breakin' Beat/Breaking Beat (2) Mixer and (3) Bounce. 'BREAKIN'BEAT' and 'MIXER' were the most popular out of the three together.

Therefore, to inable my music magazine to be of interest to my target audience, I need to ensure that: one of my most popular magazine titles are used, the contents of my magazine will appeal to more of a mass audience and that I use a women model on my front cover.

I have decided to use 'Breakin'Beat' as my new RnB/hip hop music magazine.

Deconstruction of double page spreads...

http://covers.q4music.com/Item.aspx?pageNo=6116&year=2009

if you click on the link above, there are five double page spreads, pictured on the right hand site. i am going to analyse the first three that are pictured on the following site...

(1) 'U2_DID_YOU_MISS_US'... "Nearly five years on from their last album U2 give their first interview on the campaign trail to Q. See Bono let loose with a fire extinguisher, and watch him experiment with a make-up box. Expect to read some dissent in the ranks about the frontman’s activities "....

i) Decription Analysis of U2's double page spread.

Spread over the double page spread, are four men that are a part of the band, U2. They are all standing with attitude and to some people, the way they are standing could be quite intimitading to some people as they all look very dominating. This effect is created mainly through the use of lighting and camera angle (and a good facial expression also further emphasizes the mood you want to create.) On this double page spread the background is very dark and there are pokadot spots of bright lights beaming out through the circle pokadot spots. All of the four band members are posing differently. The camera angle is slightly looking up at the band members. this angle shot would be called a 'low angle shot'.

(2) 'A ROUND WITH- KIDROCK'... "Over a Jack and coke, Kid Rock tells us why he needs treatment for boozing rather than anger management, takes notes during porn films and has dated “some psychos”. Yes it’s another of our A Round With .. features"...

i) Description analysis on the double page spread of, Kidrock...

On the left hand page of this double page spread, it is all black text on top of a white background and on the right hand page is a whole A4 page of an image of 'kidrock' with a women either side of him in skimpy costumes. This could possibly connote that he is a bit of a playboy and popular with the ladies? He is also wearing black leather clothes and is holding a glass of alcohol. we are told from the extract above that he has problems with alcohol....this would make sense..! This could also connote that perhaps he is in to prostitution? on both outside pages they have incorporated a blue bordered line down the side of the page. This is a contrasting colour to use on a page that is virtually plain.

(3) 'MTV... Grace Jones'.... Grace Jones dispells those myths about Pull Up to The Bumper and explains how Roger Moore taught her a facial expression (her lack of eyebrows may now prove a problem though).

i) Description analysis on the double page spread of, Grace Jones...

This double page spread uses the same sort of technique as the last one. for example; it has text on the left hand side and an image on the right hand side and it also uses the monochrome effect. another thing which is quite interesting with the presentation of this double page spread is that her name, 'Grace Jones' is written in grey bold capital letters and the same grey colour is incorporated mostly in the image on the right hand side page.

Deconstruction of front covers...

Deconstruction of the front cover of, 'Record Collector'...
* Madonna is a very well known, famous singer and it’s not surprising she is on the front cover of a magazine. She is very much idolised by many people. As the years have gone by, Madonna has changed her style icon, many a time. In this image she is wearing a very sexy number in black and white- these colour combinations are used for contrast. Even though she is 50 Madonna is still upbeat today. Recently she has made an album called hard candy. This is an album where she has tried a different style of music, this being RnB.

* The Tag-line for the magazine title is as follows; ‘serious about music’. This links in well with the models (madonna’s) facial expression.

* The price (£3.80) and the month and the issue number is stated below the barcode.

* “MADONNA RARE!”- This sub-title is in pink bold capital letters so it stands out. It also could connote that it’s rare to see a 50 year old in raunchy clothing so therefore it is not expected of Madonna to pull an RnB number.

* Normally you would think that pink and red sub-titles would clash but it is actually quite a nice contrast.

* Barcode- placed in the bottom right hand corner- as you turn the page you catch it in the corner of your eye.

Deconstruction of the front cover, 'Chaser'...

* The magazine title is called chaser and it in a bold font in red. This stands out and adds contrast against the gold background.

* The Sub-headings are in black- this stands out ontop of the gold background.

* Magazine issue number and price is in white font.

* The model on the front cover of this magazine is a very well known and popular RnB artist called will-i-am. He is doing a ‘whatever’ symbol with his hand- this expresses his attitude, perhaps towards music.

* The model is also wearing sun shades- this is obstruction over the eyes and therefore connotes that he is hiding something or he is a mystery in some way. This is further emphasised by his hat and the fact that his hand is covering up half of his face.

* The colour palette for this magazine is special. It uses loads of contrasting colours. The colours it uses are as follows; gold, black, white, grey, red and brown.

Deconstruction of front cover magazine, 'Batanga'...

* magazine title, 'Batanga ' has a catch phrase that reads, ' latin music and entertainment'. This tells the reader the genre of the magazine and shouts out to the readers/audience that it would particularly appeal to. A Latin genre is most propbably a neiche market in the magazine industry.

* At the top hand corner, there is a list of names. These names are put here to tell the reader who is featured in the music magazine. The lists of names are also designed to be put here to encourage the reader to buy it.

* 'summer music essentials'... This tells the reader it is a summer issue and this could be further assumed or connoted through the use of the colour palette, pink.

* Julieta Venegas, is the front cover model and therefore it would be assumed that she was also featured in the cover story. The models name is written in bold and in a brighter colour, so that it stands out from the rest of the text.

* The fish net tights that are worn by the model, on the front of the cover, could suggest that she is cheap and is perhaps looking for sexual pleasures... because fish net tights can sometimes be assoiciated with prositution. However, it could also connote that she is showing of her femininity.

* The black boots, the model wears, creates a bold statement and complements the bold black title, 'Batanga'.

* The shadows in the background, could connote dominance and could create a feeling of unease.

* The model is sitting on a white leather chair. The chair stands out from the background and this shows denomination.

* The barcode, price and issue number is placed in the left hand bottom corner. the price reads $4.99.
